Wee bit of prayer for tree plantings in Ireland

Please send a wee bit of prayer on December 2, when an aspen tree will be planted at Milltown Institute in Dublin, Ireland, and a hazel tree will be planted at An Croi. These native Irish trees are gifts of gratefulness to earth and for all the beautiful ways the Ireland spiritual direction communities of Milltown, Anamcharadas, An Croi (and many more) collaborated with generous hospitality during the Spiritual Directors International in Europe conference in Dublin, Ireland!

A special thank you to SDI Coordinating Council member Sally Taylor who will deliver the trees from her garden and graciously preside from her Buddhist stance in a ritual that celebrates the importance of trees in several spiritual traditions. Your prayers will join their blessings to nurture the trees that someday will provide shade for students studying spiritual direction.

Please share your favorite tree blessings, prayers, stories, or poems by adding a comment to this blog post.
The Ireland tree planting readings are included in the blog comments.

The ceremony went off well in the midst of a beautiful and unexpected winter sun. The sun definitely came through a gap! ( – and rain had been forecast -). We had a lovely ceremony and the aspen is growing tall in a quiet but prominent part of our grounds. Sally did well to give the context for the tree of gratefulness. The President of Milltown Institute attended himself as well as our chaplain. Several AISGA members attended and read. One class who is dealing with the theology of ecology also attended. Many thanks for this beautiful reminder of the Being Present Conference.

Tree Gift of Gratefulness READINGS

Hebrew Bible Psalm 1: 1-3
Blessed are those
who do not walk in the counsel of the
wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers.
But their delight is in the law of the
LORD,
and on God’s law they meditate day and
night.
They are like trees
planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in season
and whose leaves do not wither.
Whatever they do prospers.

Christian Gospel of Luke 21: 29-31
And Jesus told them a parable,
‘Look at the fig tree and indeed every tree.
As soon as you see them bud,
you can see for yourselves that summer is now near.
So with you
when you see these things happening:
know that the kingdom of God is near.’
Version New Jerusalem Bible

Quran Ibrahim 14: 22-24
And those who believed (in the Oneness of Allâh and Allâh’s Messengers and whatever
they brought) and did righteous deeds, will be made to enter Gardens under which rivers
flow, to dwell therein forever (i.e., in Paradise), with the permission of their Lord. Their
greeting therein will be: Salâm (peace!)
See you not how Allâh sets forth a parable? A goodly word as a goodly tree, whose root is
firmly fixed, and its branches (reach) to the sky (i.e., very high).
Giving its fruit at all times, by the Leave of its Lord and Allâh sets forth parables for
[hu]mankind in order that they may remember.
Version Dr. Mohsin

Advice from a Tree
by Ilan Shamir
Dear Friend,
Stand Tall and Proud
Sink your roots deeply into the Earth
Reflect the light of a greater source
Think long term
Go out on a limb
Remember your place among all living beings
Embrace with joy the changing seasons
For each yields its own abundance
The Energy and Birth of Spring
The Growth and Contentment of Summer
The Wisdom to let go of leaves in the Fall
The Rest and Quiet Renewal of Winter
Feel the wind and the sun
And delight in their presence
Look up at the moon that shines down upon you
And the mystery of the stars at night.
Seek nourishment from the good things in life
Simple pleasures
Earth, fresh air, light
Be content with your natural beauty
Drink plenty of water
Let your limbs sway and dance in the breezes
Be flexible
Remember your roots
Enjoy the view!
