2.  Saying goodbye and saying hello

Mike Weber, Membership Services Coordinator, is moving on after giving great service to our members, making us laugh in the office, and entertaining us with Elvis impersonations. In Mike’s words, “I started at Spiritual Directors International in January 2005. I have enjoyed serving you as Membership Services Coordinator over the years, and I have found Spiritual Directors International members to be some of the warmest people I have had the fortune to meet. I have enjoyed e-mailing you, speaking with you on the phone and meeting some of you at Spiritual Directors International events. Thank you for the memories, and I will still be with you in spirit.” Thank you, Mike! Our prayers and spirits will follow you into your next ventures.

Please welcome Jason Martinson as the new Membership Services Coordinator. Jason loves to write, has experience in using technology to help people connect, and is deeply spiritual. He has lived in Cairo and Alexandria, Egypt; California, USA; and hales from Washington, USA. He wants to commit the next leg of his journey to spirituality and service. We are blessed to have him on the team.

To welcome Jason and say goodbye to Mike, send a note to office@sdiworld.org

Please also welcome Jinks Hoffmann and Sally Taylor to the Coordinating Council. They begin their three-year terms of volunteer service on July 1. A special thank you to Jinks Hoffmann as she relinquishes her Poetry Editor role with Presence journal to assume the Coordinating Council position. Jinks was born in South Africa and now lives in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Her Jewish spirituality, passion for poetry, and experience with charitable organizations will be very helpful. Sally began her life in Washington, USA and now lives in Northern Ireland. Her Buddhist spirituality, interest in global social justice, and experience with non-profit management will benefit Spiritual Directors International. Thanks to Jinks and Sally as they offer their governing wisdom to the global learning community.  Follow this link to learn more about the governing body of Spiritual Directors International, called the Coordinating Council.

Complete information and registration forms are available at http://sdiworld.org/events/pilgrimage-to-machu-picchu.html

Spiritual Directors International received 104 wonderful workshop proposals for the April 15 – 22, 2009 Events in North America: Houston, Texas. Many thanks to the workshop selection committee who balanced presenter ages, spiritual affiliations, gender, global geographies, and topics. Forty-two proposals were selected for presentation leaving 62 unselected. Please support with your prayers all the members in their joy and their disappointment. Join us in giving thanks for their outpouring of gifts to the community.

Registration for the Spiritual Directors International events in North America: Houston, Texas will begin in September. Every member will receive a hard copy brochure about the events. If you would like to send colleagues a hard copy of the events brochure, use the form to sign up for Listen, http://www.sdiworld.org/publications/listen.html to include their addresses.  Addresses for sending the snail mail brochure need to be submitted by July 31.

6. Healthcare and spiritual direction in Houston, Texas

Spiritual Directors International 2009 Events in North America: Houston, Texas, will be held April 15-22 at the Hyatt Regency Downtown. The Texas Medical Center, based in Houston, is the largest medical district in the world. So when spiritual directors come to town what would be more natural than a collaboration between these two ministries. Beginning with a pre conference retreat and professional development day for anyone interested in the relationship between spiritual direction and healthcare, this topic will continue to be explored in several of the conference workshops. Complete information and registration will be available at http://sdiworld.org/2009-international-event-houston-tx.html in September.

10. How does Presence journal look?

It never fails. Every time Presence mails, three or four people get a copy with some of the pages out of order. We’ve talked to the printer about it, and they try to catch the bad copies before they go out the door. But a few manage to slip through. If you are ever the unlucky recipient of a mangled Presence, call or e-mail the office, and a new one will be whisked right out to you.  office@sdiworld.org, 425-455-1565.

11.  Web Tip

Have you visited the Tributes page lately? Many people have made significant contributions to the global ministry of spiritual direction. On the tributes page, the Spiritual Directors International community remembers those who have died. These spiritual companions have left us a rich heritage to cherish and to tend for future generations.

12.  The July reflection is by poet William Seaton. This poem won an honorable mention in the 2007-2008 Presence poetry contest. (The results of the 2008-2009 contest will be announced in the September issue of Presence.)

Boca de Tomatlan

From this cove the hills
swell up like old tumors,
straining with luxuriance,
tense with heat and damp
and pain of constant overreaching.
An iguana with a bad conscience
dashes down a tree and vanishes.
A bright orange flower offers
to sell herself to tourists.
A pelican bobs like a buoy.
Its ancient eyes assure
all who happen here,
“Have no fear. I, too,
am your heart’s likeness.”

July is the dead of winter for members in the Southern Hemisphere and the center of summer for members in the Northern Hemisphere. Pelicans bob in both hemispheres, inviting us to pay attention. Or perhaps no pelicans live near you or the people with whom you companion. What in your immediate environment reminds you to “Have no fear. I, too, am your heart’s likeness?” Spend some time contemplating nature’s beauty in July, and the way nature teaches us to trust.

Peace be with you,

Liz
