Presence is celebrating a birthday! To honor Presence journal publishing its 20th volume in 2014, we’re printing all SDI publications in full color this year. It’s our way of saying thank you for making a commitment to keep Presence and the colorful legacy of spiritual companionship alive and filled with light.
Twenty years ago, an exceptional group of people came together to create the very first issue of Presence. Recently I spoke with Jim Keegan, SJ who served on the journal’s founding editorial review panel. He couldn’t believe time has flown by so fast. The other founding editorial panelists we thank include Bob Gardenhire III, Felicia McKnight, Sharon Plankenhorn, Elizabeth Stout, and Richard Woods, OP. During the past twenty years, dozens of spirituality scholars and spiritual directors from around the world have served as volunteers on the editorial review panel.
SDI gives special recognition and thanks to three primary editors of Presence who, over the course of twenty years, have shepherded the world premier journal on spiritual direction that Presence is today: Nick Wagner, the current editor, John Mabry, and Susan Jorgensen.
Together the editors and review panelists, authors, poets, artists, advertisers, and gifted production staff have co-created a legacy in print—a legacy that acknowledges our human heritage of spiritual companionship around the world and across traditions. I invite you to join me in a prayer of gratefulness for their dedication to keeping the journal fresh, engaging, and alive.
When we thought about ways to make this anniversary year special, bringing color to as many pages as possible seemed to be the right way to celebrate. As you probably know, print publishing today is a risky undertaking. Yet, as we start a new year, a favorite quote by Kenneth S. Davis brings me hope, “Life truly lived is a risky business, and if one puts up too many fences against risk one ends up by shutting out life itself.” Yes, it’s risky to print SDI publications in full color this year. Yes, we will step into this colorful adventure and who knows, the added color might inspire more members to join, making Presence color-filled for years to come!
Thank you for being part of an inclusive, global learning community that desires to learn and grow in understanding, as well as to let go into Mystery. Together, we make Presence possible.
May the light that emanates from the cover of the first issue of Presence shine into your life in this New Year.
