Harry Pickens is a pianist and composer whose music touches the heart and speaks to the soul. He was the 2009 recipient of the Kentucky Governor’s Award for the Arts in Education, the state's highest honor in the creative and performing arts. He also serves as artist-in-residence for the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts and recently served as ambassador for artistry in education at Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
His multifaceted musical career has featured collaborations with hundreds of the world’s great jazz artists, choral works featuring the poetry of Wendell Berry, and a recent performance for the Dalai Lama.
As a participant at a recent contemplative concert of Pickens, Sara Ferebee said, "Harry's concerts are a personal meditation; he becomes completely one with the music. His music during one of these concerts is created in the moment, completely improvisational. He simply plays what is in his soul, and in doing so, touches the souls of those who listen."
