Leadership Institute: Leading with Integrity and Compassion
Tuesday, 14 April 2015
9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
Come engage and ask challenging questions about spiritual direction and ethics. Am I aware of my personal boundaries and ethics as a program leader? How do I approach conversations that carry tension or conflict? How can I apply the ethics of spiritual direction to the greater civic issues, like race?
For more than twenty-five years, SDI has been hosting a Leadership Institute, formerly known as the symposium. The purpose remains the same today. It is an annual gathering of people who form, train, mentor, and supervise spiritual directors and other spiritual care providers, in order to help equip and grow their ministry and service.
Through small group discussions, panels, presentations from leaders in the field, and group evaluation of best practices and current tools, the Leadership Institute has continually been a refreshing and productive time for formation and training program leaders. This year, we will let the words of Thomas Merton's prayer guide us through the topic of Leading with Integrity and Compassion.
My Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me,
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself,
and the fact that I think that I am following your will
does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
does in fact please you.
and I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this
you will lead me by the right road
though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always
though I may seem to be lost
and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear,
for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.
—Thomas Merton, Thoughts in Solitude
