Mirabai Starr Workshop - INDWELLING: Feminine Wisdom Across the Spiritual Spectrum
“Women across cultural boundaries are rising with our echoing yes in response to the collective call to step up and repair the broken world."
~ Mirabai Starr
This SDI workshop will provide a face-to-face, small-group experience with former SDI Conference keynote speaker, Mirabai Starr. A contemplative author and mystic for our time, Mirabai will present insights from her new book honoring the rise of the fierce and tender voice of the feminine.
At our workshop, she will celebrate women mystics and wisdom beings across the spiritual traditions, such as Teresa of Avila, Julian of Norwich, Mary Magdalene, the Shekinah, Rabia, Fatima, Tara, Quan Yin, Kali, and indigenous Mother goddesses.
Held at the welcoming offices of Spiritual Directors International in Bellevue, Washington, this gathering will invite you to engage in experiential exploration with:
- Contemplative readings from the mystics
- Group reflections
- Evocative writing exercises
- Inter-spiritual chanting and
- Silent sitting
Our intention will be to weave these luminous elements into a basket of awakened community.
Come join us as we invoke and honor the "wild mercy" inherent in feminine spirituality.
And please note - enrollment for this workshop is limited.
Mirabai Starr writes creative non-fiction and contemporary translations of sacred literature. She taught Philosophy and World Religions at the University of New Mexico-Taos for 20 years and now teaches and speaks internationally on contemplative practice and inter-spiritual dialog. A certified bereavement counselor, Mirabai helps mourners harness the transformational power of loss. She has received critical acclaim for her revolutionary new translations of the mystics, John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila and Julian of Norwich. She is the award-winning author of GOD OF LOVE: A Guide to the Heart of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, CARAVAN OF NO DESPAIR: A Memoir of Loss and Transformation, and Mother of God Similar to Fire, a collaboration with iconographer, William Hart McNichols. Her latest book, WILD MERCY: Living the Fierce & Tender Wisdom of the Women Mystics, is being launched in Bellevue, Washington in April, with SDI as proud host of the launch event. Mirabai lives with her extended family in the mountains of northern New Mexico.
Mirabai Starr's latest book, WILD MERCY: Living the Fierce & Tender Wisdom of the Women Mystics, will be officially launched the day after we hold this workshop. (So, all workshop participants can consider themselves privileged to a sanctioned "sneak peak." )
Mirabai's book is nothing less than a journey of awakening as she invokes and chronicles the feminine mystic, one who gathers the pain of the world into her arms and transmutes it with “wild mercy”—a merging of fierce courage with the unstoppable forces of forgiveness, compassion, and love.
“Women across cultural boundaries are rising with our echoing yes in response to the collective call to step up and repair the broken world,” writes Mirabai Starr. “We are rooting ourselves in our resounding no in the face of injustice to our fellow human beings and our Mother Earth.”
With Wild Mercy, Starr inspires us to awaken our own inner mystic as we immerse ourselves in the guidance of sages such as Teresa of Ávila, Mary Magdalene, Hildegard of Bingen, the ecstatic poet Mirabai, and the Sufi saint Rabia Basri. The book also invites us to join with the archetypal energies of figures like Kuan Yin, Tara, Kali, Sophia, and the Shekinah. All these mystics are presented so that we may find the light to guide our own journey of spiritual awakening and service in the world.
Mirabai Starr is a respected scholar of the "divine feminine" and the translator of St.Teresa of Ávila's books. In this interview with SDI executive director, Rev. Seifu Anil Singh-Molares, Mirabai explores St. Teresa's views on contemplative practice, service, leading change as a woman, and helping all people find liberation. This will give you a taste of Mirabai's insight and approach and a chance to celebrate a great woman mystic through one of her most eloquent contemporary interpreters.
