Northern Virginia Regional Gathering for Spiritual Companions - May 19, 2019
Please take a few moments to read this letter of invitation.
This free event is sponsored by Spiritual Directors International.
The next gathering of spiritual directors and companions in Northern Virginia will be on Sunday, May 19, 2019 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, 1500 N Glebe Road, Arlington, VA 22207. Park in the parking lot on Glebe Road, cross 16th Street, come up the stairs into the building and the Gathering Space. There is handicap parking in the lot and a handicap entrance facing Glebe Road. After crossing 16th street, use the elevator at the Glebe Road handicap entrance instead of the 16th Street doors and take the elevator to the Sanctuary level.
We will have the privilege of hosting one of the founders of SDI, Lucy Abbott Tucker, who will lead us in a workshop she calls "Down the Rabbit Hole, The Wonder of Spiritual Direction." The workshop will consider three qualities that Alice needed for her journey into Wonderland: the willingness to be messy, the gift of curiosity, and the gift of courage. We will consider what these qualities look like and require of our directees and what they invite us to as spiritual directors. Our time together will include input and discussion. We will be asking participants to donate $5 for this special program.
Lucy has worked in adult formation and the preparation of people for the ministry of spiritual direction for the past thirty years. In 1983 she studied at the Institute for Spiritual Leadership and Catholic Theological Union, Chicago where she obtained a Masters Degree in Theology, then worked for many years at the Institute for Spiritual Leadership in Chicago. Lucy has been active in the work of Spiritual Directors International, serving on the first Coordinating Council and chairing the committee that prepared the Guidelines for Ethical Conduct. She has been involved in retreats and workshops throughout the United States, Europe, Australia, and Canada. Lucy has also published several articles on adult formation and the ministry of spiritual direction.
We will need to know how many people will be attending this gathering, so please RSVP here if you intend to join us on May 19th.
Lucy also will be leading the SDI’s Spiritual Direction Supervision Training Workshop, Monday – Friday, May 20-24, 2019 at the Washington Retreat House near the National Shrine and Catholic University. There is still room if you would like to take that workshop. More information can be found at: https://www.sdiworld.org/educational-event/5-day-supervision-training
Finally, Susan Walker, who works with the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, DC, is looking for spiritual directors who speak Spanish. If you are comfortable in doing spiritual direction in Spanish, please contact her directly at firstname.lastname@example.org
We look forward to seeing everyone on May 19th!
If you are not able to attend this meeting, but want to be informed about future events or meetings, please send an email to Steven Crandell, Director of Content for SDI: email@example.com.
Note: These gatherings seek to provide an opportunity for spiritual directors and companions in our region to connect. We want to create a place where we can learn about other faiths and religious traditions, share contemplative time or meditation, and practice new skills in spiritual care. Maybe you feel the same? Please join us.
