SDI Webinar: The Enneagram & Spiritual Companionship - Tools for Transformation
4-part Webinar Series
(Participate live or watch the video recordings at your convenience)
This is a spiritual wake-up call for you and all the people you companion. Please join us.
The Enneagram is an invaluable tool in spiritual companionship because, in the words of presenter Sandra Smith, "it deepens awareness of specific patterns that lull us to sleep in our lives."
The beauty of this ancient wisdom system is that once we are aware of our tendency to sleep-walk through life, it becomes far easier to wake ourselves up.
Anyone engaged in spiritual care, regardless of tradition, can benefit from this webinar series because The Enneagram is ultimately a self-tailoring, non-judgemental spiritual practice. Like all spiritual companionship, it begins - and continues - with the invitation to listen to what resonates deep within us and to build authentic lives.
This four-session series is designed for spiritual directors/companions - as well as chaplains and other spiritual guides - who want to learn how to use the Enneagram system with those they companion. In three of the sessions, Sandra and Chris work directly with a webinar participant, who knows their Enneagram type, to demonstrate engagement with the Enneagram in a spiritual companioning session.
The series runs between March 19 and April 9, 2019. But even if that doesn't fit your schedule, please remember: each session is recorded so you can watch at your convenience.
Sandra C. Smith and Christopher T. Copeland are Certified Narrative Tradition Enneagram teachers who, together, have over 30 years of Enneagram teaching experience. Graduates of Wake Forest University and Candler School of Theology, both are spiritual directors who engage the Enneagram as a lens in the companioning process. Chris and Sandra co-host the podcast, Heart of the Enneagram, with more than 100,000 downloads in over 80 countries. Their book, Heart of the Enneagram: A Companion for Deepening Personal and Spiritual Growth, contains poems, quotes, and prayers for each of the Enneagram types and engages readers in the spiritual practice of journaling through guided questions.
Week 1: Introduction - The Enneagram as a Map of How We Process Our Lives --- (Live: March 19 - 1 PM Seattle/Los Angeles, 4 PM New York, 8 PM London, March 20th: 4 AM Hong Kong, 7 AM Melbourne, Australia.)
Chris and Sandra introduce the Enneagram as a map of our internal processing system and the automatic patterns that flow from a particular way of processing. They share what the Enneagram is and is not, as well as best practices for using it in spiritual direction. Additionally, they offer an overview of each of the nine Enneagram perspectives as well as the three centers of intelligence: Head, Heart, and Body. Brief contemplative practice begins and ends the session.
Week 2: Head or Thinking Center - Demonstration & Discussion - (Live: March 26 - 1 PM Seattle/Los Angeles, 4 PM New York, 8 PM London, March 27th: 4 AM Hong Kong, 7 AM Melbourne, Australia.)
Focusing on the Head or Thinking center of intelligence, this session explores common themes for types 5, 6 & 7. Sandra and Chris demonstrate working with a directee who leads with one of these types. A time for questions will follow the demonstration. Contemplative practice bookends this session.
Week 3 : Heart or Feeling Center - Demonstration & Discussion - (Live: April 2 - 1 PM Seattle/Los Angeles, 4 PM New York, 9 PM London, April 3rd: 4 AM Hong Kong, 7 AM Melbourne, Australia.)
This session examines common themes for types 2, 3 & 4, all part of the Heart or Feeling center of intelligence. A live demonstration, with a participant who leads with one of these types, will be followed by a time for questions. Contemplative practice will begin and end the session.
Week 4: Body or Sensing Center - Demonstration & Discussion - (Live: April 9 - 1 PM Seattle/Los Angeles, 4 PM New York, 8 PM London, April 10th: 4 AM Hong Kong, 6 AM Melbourne, Australia.)
Exploring the Body or Sensing center of intelligence, the fourth session highlights common themes for types 8, 9 & 1. Chris and Sandra companion a webinar participant to demonstrate spiritual direction with those who lead with one of these types. This final session ends with a time for questions. And, of course, we will offer a brief, but invitingly deep contemplative practice to end the series.
Special Opportunity for Volunteer Participants
We are looking for three webinar participants to act as volunteers during the series. These people should know their Enneagram types and be willing to engage in a spiritual companionship session with our presenters. We do not ask that volunteers reveal any sensitive, private information, but that they be truthful and genuine in their responses and engagement. This is an opportunity to learn how Enneagram-oriented companionship might feel to a directee/spiritual care participant. If you would like to volunteer, please fill out this short application form. We will contact you for a brief interview with the presenters if you have been chosen as a possible participant. Naturally, you would need to be available on the date and time in question when the session goes live. We need one volunteer for the Head or Thinking Center (types 5 6 and 7), Heart or Feeling Center ( types 2, 3 or 4) and Body or Sensing Center (types 8,9,1). Thanks.
Sandra Smith, MDiv - Sandra is an Accredited IEA (International Enneagram Association) Professional who teaches the Enneagram System throughout North America to promote personal, professional and spiritual growth. She has been a presenter at SDI conferences on the topic of personality and spirituality. Much of Sandra’s Enneagram work is with corporations and organizations where she offers team building and staff development using the Enneagram as a map for deepening self-awareness. She is a trained community mediator and offers conflict resolution in organizational settings. Before attending theology school, she spent 17 years in the corporate world. Post seminary, she co-founded and directed Holy Ground, a feminist nonprofit retreat center in Asheville, NC where she resides.
Christopher T. Copeland, MDiv, JD, DMin - Chris is a teacher, spiritual director, and minister who has spent his life companioning others on their spiritual journeys, inviting them to become more fully who they are created to be. To facilitate this transformative work, Chris uses various tools that help awaken people to their truest selves, in particular the Enneagram. As assistant professor of spirituality at Wake Forest University School of Divinity, Chris integrates spiritual practices and the wisdom of the Enneagram to support the growth and healing of individuals, congregations, and organizations. A native of North Carolina, Chris lives in Winston-Salem with his husband, Bernie.
Watch Sandra Smith below as she speaks about spiritual direction and how to connect head and heart. In this SDI Learns video, Sandra speaks with spiritual director and law professor, Susan Stabile of St. Thomas University Law School.
Our presenters suggest that those who register for this webinar not go online to take an "Enneagram test." Both Sandra and Chris find these to be more confusing than helpful. For those who are new to the Ennegram and want to learn more about your "type," Sandra and Chris invite you to purchase The Essential Enneagram by Dr. David Daniels and Victoria Price. You may then read the nine paragraphs on pps 5-7, select the two that most resonate with who you believe yourselves to be, see the answer key on pg 9, then read about those two types in this book.
Each session session will run 75 minutes. We understand that the timing of the seminar will not be convenient in every time zone on the planet. For those who have trouble making this time, a recorded copy of each session will be made available to all those who sign up. CEU credits are available for all those who participate. (See below)
This series of webinars aims to help all those who provide spiritual care to learn how to use the Enneagram with the people they companion. Through actual interviews with participants, our presenters will demonstrate engagement with the Enneagram in a spiritual companionship session. As in all our webinars, there will be space for contemplation and for question and response with our presenters. We hope each participant will leave the webinar with a clear idea of how the Enneagram can be used in spiritual companionship and when it might be appropriate.
